What El Niño Means for Jamaica in 2026

El Niño does not start in Jamaica. It begins thousands of kilometres away, when surface waters in the central and eastern tropical Pacific become unusually warm and the atmosphere above them responds. That ocean-atmosphere shift can rearrange winds, rainfall and temperatures far beyond the Pacific. For Jamaica, it is best understood as a change in seasonal odds, not a promise that every parish will experience the same weather.

What the 2026 outlook says

In its 9 July 2026 diagnostic discussion, the US Climate Prediction Center said El Niño was continuing and expected to strengthen through the end of 2026. It placed the chance of the event lasting into early spring 2027 at 97 percent and the chance of a very strong event during October to December at 81 percent. Those probabilities describe the Pacific climate pattern; they do not predict Jamaica’s daily weather months in advance.

The World Meteorological Organization’s July outlook also indicated an increased likelihood of below-normal rainfall in parts of the Caribbean from July through September. WMO stresses that seasonal maps show the most likely category, not certainty, and that impacts differ from one El Niño event to another.
